| Equine Excellence Award™ Program #1. Standing Quietly Next to Handler/ Ground Tying This first part of this evaluation component demonstrates that your equine can remain by the handler’s side at a safe distance and in a quiet manner and on a loose lead. The second part includes being able to place the lead over the equine’s back and have them stay in place while the handler walks away to a distance of 10 feet and then returns. #2. Acceptance of Handling & Grooming This component demonstrates that your equine will accept being touched on their face, ears, body and feet. This gives your equine the instruction they need to be polite and calm for you and anyone who needs to handle them, such as a farrier or a vet. #3. Head Lowering – Haltering/ Calm Down This component demonstrates that your equine will lower it’s head on cue for haltering, and also as a signal to calm down. #4. Walking on a Loose Lead This component demonstrates that the handler is in control of their equine while in motion. #5. Backup, Go Forward and Stop This component demonstrates that the equine is responsive to their handler’s request for changes in direction. #6. Reaction to Distractions The equine should remain fairly calm and focused on the handler while being subjected to a distracting noise and visual, such as a plastic bag. #7. Reaction to Others The equine should remain calm and focused on their handler while walking near other people or animals. #8. Single Rein - Hip and Shoulder Control One Rein Stop This component demonstrates that the equine is responsive to their handler’ request to move their hips and shoulders on cue.
